Often when field archers let down, they're actually doing a bit of sneaky range-finding. They raise the bow, measure the target against some part of the bow, and get the distance and angle. Then they let down and start again.
If anyone's interested in having a crack at field archery, Dearne Valley AC run some good shoots. I'm hoping to go to the Doncaster & District Archery Association shoot there on Remembrance Sunday, and may go to the Yorkshire field archery champs in October.
